Personality:

Mister Scratch is an easy guy to be fascinated by, at first blush. Created by the Dark Presence to replace the writer Alan Wake, he has been tinted by every tabloid rumor over the years, painted into a rock-star party animal with a mercurial temper. He’s attractive and knows it - in American Nightmare, he proves just how magnetic he can be, talking girls into his motel room and winning over a whole party of people. He’s got all the dry wit that the real Alan does, cracking wry joke after joke and teasing mercilessly, but none of the social inhibition; a combination that sets him up to be well-suited to any situation where a sense of humor can diffuse the idea of potential danger.

Of course, that well of wit and lack of inhibition lead to a whole lot of arrogance. During one of his video recordings to Alan, he says, point blank: "Do you know the real difference between us? I'm not afraid to be the center of attention!" This self-centered behavior is easy to spot within moments of being around Mister Scratch - all that matters to him is what is fun, what feels good, and what gets him the most attention in any given situation. Where the feelings of others are concerned, he is flippant at best. Sure, he might make someone else happy or feel good now and again, but it’s almost entirely an accident when it does, and it’s much more likely he’s shrugging in the face of someone he pissed off. He never seems to be serious, even when he’s killing someone, dancing around and laughing in their blood.

And dance around he does - the Avatar of Darkness is as showboat-y as they come, with a theatrical streak a mile wide. Could he just kill people and ruin Alan Wake’s reputation by leaving behind just enough proof? Yeah he could! But it’s so much more FUN to leave tapes to rub it in the writer’s face, or to let people who are worried about Alan being missing glimpse him from afar for Just Long Enough to shake them up. During one of the tapes, he even makes a show of talking about what sort of weapons he most enjoys murdering people with. It’s in this way that he is at his most creative, openly considering guns “too impersonal” and “too quick.” Being given the likeness and identity of an artist means he can’t escape the want to create something - it’s just that he prefers instead of novels to create mayhem. He likes to PLAY, and practicality takes a backseat to the flair of it all.

And flair is something that the hedonist drapes himself in in SPADES. "You have money, fame, and you don't know what to do with it. I do,” he told Alan. Being every tabloid rumor means that he is, by design, the biggest party animal he can be. He has little concept of his own humanity, but what he does know is FUN, and how swiftly fun and corruption can go hand and hand. It helps that he has never actually BEEN human, not really - he’s a boundless well of energy, ready to do anything and everything to excess all night, every night. After all, they would be boring rumors if they only said he was tempering himself.

Of course, the other rumors - the ones of Alan Wake’s temper - have also been blown into wild scale. All those tabloid articles detailing the charges pressed when Alan punched a cameraman have morphed and changed, and what’s left behind is an unstable, violent man. He has no reservations about getting into fights, and he not only lacks the fear of pain, but he RELISHES the feeling of someone else’s blood on his hands. And it’s not just about the violence, not just about killing or making it hurt - the monster wants to toy with his victims, a sick, sadistic dark mirror to Alan Wake’s difficulty socially connecting with others. Mister Scratch loves that sense of connection…and there’s nothing more intimate, in his dark, evil mind, than the connection you form with someone when they’re about to die.
